Interested in becoming a GO BIG READ reviewer?
Terrific! I’m so excited you want to participate in my quest to get the word out about our independent Nebraska writers. But I also know you have questions about how this will work and what actually is required. Here are some of the questions that folks have asked me. Maybe your question is here.
So, tell me again. What exactly is this site and how does it work?
As you know, one of the most effective methods to market anything is still “word of mouth.” So that is the entire purpose of this site–to connect Nebraska independent writers with readers who will read our books, enjoy them, and then tell others about them. Therefore, our authors have set aside a limited number of review copies just for our Go Big! Read! readers.
In this program, as long as you are 18 years or older, you may request a free review copy of any of the books you see on our site. All we ask is that once you’ve read the book, you recommend that book to others via Amazon OR Goodreads.
What exactly do you mean by “indie author”?
Great question! “Indie author” can and does mean different things to different folks. I am defining an “indie author” as anyone who has either self-published a book OR published with a small, independent publisher. For example, my own publishing house Prairieland Press, is a small independent flat-fee publisher. So, even though my authors are not considered self-published, they are considered “indie authors”. You can read more about my model on my website.
I like the idea of supporting Nebraska authors. But I’m not a professional reviewer. I’m not sure I’m qualified to do this.
A “professional reviewer” is just a reader with an opinion. If you are a reader and you are willing to share your opinion about the found on the Go Big! Read! website on Amazon and Goodreads, then you are exactly the type of reviewer we are looking for! The more folks talk about us and our books, the quicker the word will spread that we have talented writers in Nebraska, creating books for you and for readers like you.
What happens if I don’t feel I can recommend a book to others?
Hey, I get it. Not every book is right for every reader. I can’t tell you the number of books I’ve started to read and had to put down because it just wasn’t right for me. But, as writers, it helps us grow in our craft if we can understand exactly what it is about our books that aren’t working for our readers. It also helps the GO BIG READ review board determine which authors may (or may not) be a good fit for the readers at this site.
Therefore, if you feel you can’t recommend the book to others in your social networks, all I ask is that you send me a note and let me know exactly what it was about that book that didn’t work for you. And remember, I will be sharing your note with the author who wrote that book, so be honest, but please–be kind, as well.
How many different books may I request?
Well, the answer to this is as many as you want (sort of). But remember, we only have a limited number of review copies for each book. Please only request a book if you are interested in reading and reviewing it. And remember, if you don’t feel you can recommend a book, pleased let us know so that we can share your concerns with the author.
I requested a free review copy and the book was sent to me as a digital download. I thought I was getting an actual print book!
I’m sorry you feel misled. I didn’t do that on purpose. Print review copies are expensive to produce. I know that first hand, and therefore I only require my authors to provide digital review copies for our readers. If this is not a convenient form for you, let me know and I will forward your request for a print review copy to the author. It ultimately will be his or her decision whether or not to honor that request with an actual print book.
What exactly is an “indie” author?
An “indie” author is an author who has either published his or her books without the help of a publisher OR has worked with a small publisher to publish those books, and the author is responsible for most or all of the marketing of those books. Marketing a book is hard enough when you have a publishing team to help you. When you are the sole marketer on the team, it becomes exponentially harder. My hope is that this site will make that process a little bit easier for all of us!
So, one of my favorite authors is from Nebraska but I don’t see her on your site. Why is that?
If your favorite Nebraska author (male or female) isn’t on our site, there may be a few reasons for that. The most likely one is that she (or he) just hasn’t heard about us yet. After all, we are fairly new and are still working to get the word out about our site. Please–feel free to let him (or her) know about us and encourage her (or him) to join us. But remember, our site was specifically designed to help independent authors spread the word about their books. If your favorite author does not consider himself or herself to be an “indie” author, this site may not be a good fit for him or her.
Okay, I’m convinced. How do I sign up?
There is no actual “sign up”. As long as you are 18 years of age or older, all you have to do to get started is to click on the photo of the book you wish to read and (hopefully) recommend. It will take you directly to that book’s information page. There you will find additional information on how to get your review copy of that book.
