Interested in becoming a GO BIG READ reader?
Terrific! I’m so excited you want to participate in my quest to get the word out about our independent Nebraska writers. But I also know you have questions about how this will work and what actually is required. Here are some of the questions that folks have asked me. Maybe your question is here.
So, tell me again. What exactly is this site and how does it work?
As you know, one of the most effective methods to market anything is still “word of mouth.” So that is the entire purpose of this site–to connect Nebraska independent writers with Nebraska readers who will request our books, read them, enjoy them, and then tell everyone they know about them.
In this program, as long as you are 18 years or older, you may request a free copy of any of the books you see on our site. All we ask is that once you’ve read the book, you recommend that book to others via your social media sites OR on Amazon OR with a local librarian or book seller. Then, once you’ve shared it with your network(s), complete the Feedback form that I send to you and submit it to me so I can share your feedback with the author.
I like the idea of supporting Nebraska authors. But I’m not a professional reviewer. I’m not sure I’m qualified to do this.
Professional reviews are great. And, as an author, I love when I get one. But I’m not asking folks to do anything quite that formal here at Go Big Read. Instead, all I’m asking folks to do is read books by Nebraska authors and then tell other folks about those books. You can do it through Facebook or Twitter or some other social sharing site OR you can post a quick note on Amazon or Goodreads OR you can tell your local librarian or book store owner about the book. It really doesn’t matter where or how you choose to share your opinions about our books. We just ask that you share them! The more you talk about us and our books, the quicker the word will spread that we have talented writers in Nebraska, creating books for you and for readers like you.
What happens if I don’t feel I can recommend a book to others?
Hey, I get it. Not every book is right for every reader. I can’t tell you the number of books I’ve started to read and had to put down because it just wasn’t right for me. But, as writers, it helps us grow in our craft if we can understand exactly what it is about our books that aren’t working for our readers. It also helps the GO BIG READ review board determine which authors may (or may not) be a good fit for the readers at this site.
Therefore, if you feel you can’t recommend the book to others in your social networks, all I ask is that you send me a note and let me know exactly what it was about that book that didn’t work for you. And remember, I will be sharing your note with the author who wrote that book, so be honest, but please–be kind, as well.
How many different books may I request?
Well, the answer to this is as many as you want (sort of). We do ask that you request only one book at a time. Once you’ve read it, recommended it, and completed the Feedback Form, you are free to request a new book to read and recommend. And remember, if you don’t feel you can recommend a book, we still want you to complete the Feedback Form so we know exactly what it was about that book that caused you concerns.
I requested a free review copy and the book was sent to me as a digital download. I thought I was getting an actual print book!
I’m sorry you feel misled. I didn’t do that on purpose. Print review copies are expensive to produce. I know that first hand, and therefore I only require my authors to provide digital review copies for our readers. If this is not a convenient form for you, let me know and I will forward your request for a print review copy to the author. It ultimately will be his or her decision whether or not to honor that request with an actual print book.
What exactly is an “indie” author?
An “indie” author is an author who has either published his or her books without the help of a publisher OR has worked with a small publisher to publish those books, and the author is responsible for most or all of the marketing of those books. Marketing a book is hard enough when you have a publishing team to help you. When you are the sole marketer on the team, it becomes exponentially harder. My hope is that this site will make that process a little bit easier for all of us!
So, one of my favorite authors is from Nebraska but I don’t see her on your site. Why is that?
If your favorite Nebraska author (male or female) isn’t on our site, there may be a few reasons for that. The most likely one is that she (or he) just hasn’t heard about us yet. After all, we are fairly new and are still working to get the word out about our site. Please–feel free to let him (or her) know about us and encourage her (or him) to join us. But remember, our site was specifically designed to help independent authors spread the word about their books. If your favorite author does not consider himself or herself to be an “indie” author, this site may not be a good fit for him or her.
Okay, I’m convinced. How do I sign up?
There is no actual “sign up”. As long as you are 18 years of age or older, all you have to do to get started is to click on the photo of the book you wish to read and (hopefully) recommend. It will take you directly to that book’s information page. There you will find (among other things) a download form to fill out, requesting a review copy of the book. Fill it out and you will be sent a link to receive your free book. And if you sign up for a book and don’t receive the link to your free download, please be sure to let me know. As we all know, technology is great when it works, and not so great when it doesn’t!
I have a question that wasn’t answered here.
Still have some questions? Feel free to use the contact page and send them to me. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
