So, I understand how this works for readers. But how do I become a Go Big Read writer, with my photo on the author page and my books available for reading and recommending?
So glad you asked! If you are a Nebraska writer (aged 18 or older), you are eligible to join our site. I have 2 payment plans and all the details (including requirements for participating) on that page.
I’m confused. I’m sure that I read somewhere that it wouldn’t cost me anything to participate on this site.
It doesn’t cost our readers anything to participate on the site or to request books to read and recommend. But there is a cost to writers to participate, to help cover the cost of developing and maintaining it. I apologize for the confusion.
Can I get my money back if no reader chooses to request my book or recommend my book to others?
I’m sorry, but there are no guarantees that participation in our site will result in recommendations and / or sales. But, if you have participated in our site for a year and no one has requested your book or chosen to recommend your book to others, I would strongly urge you not to renew your membership with us. Our site and our readers are obviously not a good fit for you and your book(s).
Why is this website only open to Nebraska writers?
Since the mission of this website is to connect Nebraska writers with Nebraska readers, it is imperative that our writers actually be Nebraska writers. But I am leaving it up to you to decide how that title applies to you. If you were born in Nebraska but currently live elsewhere, for example, that would still qualify you as a Nebraska author.
Once I pay and complete my author / book packet, how soon will my book be listed on the site?
My goal is to get to everyone on the site as quickly as possible, but since I am only a “one-woman” organization AND I am also a writer, that might not be as quickly as you or I hope. Once I receive your payment and your completed packet, I am asking that you give me until the end of the following month to get all of your information “live” on the site. In other words, if you pay in March and get the packet to me before the end of March, my goal will be to have your information live on the site before the end of April, and your first “official” paid month on the site will be May.
Why do I need to have my book(s) listed with a distributor like Ingram and available for purchase from anywhere other than Amazon?
Not everyone buys their books from Amazon. And since we are encouraging our readers to recommend our books to local librarians and booksellers, we want to be sure that those folks can easily find our books, if they want to order them.
I am concerned about giving out 100 or more review copies of my book. How can I afford that?
I am not requiring or expecting that you will be mailing out print copies of books to readers for review. Instead, I am assuming you will send your reader a free digital copy (pdf, mobi, or epub file). So the cost for you to do so should be minimal.
I’m glad to hear I won’t have to mail out physical books. But I’m still not sure how this process will work.
Once I get a request for a free review copy of your book, I will send you an email to let you know that your book has been requested. I will also email the reader to let him or her know that I have forwarded the request to you. Once you get the request, you are free to fulfill that request in whichever way is most convenient for you, including sending out a print copy, if that is the best choice for you and your book. I personally will be using the service BookFunnel to fulfill request orders for most of our Prairieland Press titles. Here is a link to that service if you want more information about what that service is and how it works.
I have a question that wasn’t answered here.
Still have some questions? Feel free to use the contact page and send them to me. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
